Addressing ADHD’s Role in Compulsive Behaviours and Criminal Activity

A pioneering project by The Oasis Partnership, the ADHD Resilience Network explores how ADHD contributes to addiction, gambling, and criminal behaviors. We offer evidence-based resources and peer support to reduce recidivism and promote positive life change.

The ADHD Resilience Network is a pilot project launched by The Oasis Partnership, focused on understanding and addressing the links between ADHD, high-risk compulsive behaviours, and criminal activity within underserved populations. Many adults with ADHD struggle with compulsive behaviours, such as durg and alcohol misuse.  impulsive decision-making, and encounters with the criminal justice system. We aim to change that narrative through innovative research and peer-led support models.

Currently funded by Thames Valley Police and Crime Commissioner, the project will feature a combination of lived-experience podcasts, support groups with guest speakers and discussion groups and a growing resource library. This initiative is intended to set a new standard for neurodivergent support that can scale into a national model.

What are our aims – Podcasts, Newsletter and Support Group:

  1. Raise Awareness: We highlight the complex relationship between ADHD, substance use and other compulsive behaviours,  and criminal activity to reduce stigma and promote understanding among health and social care professionals.

  2. Develop New Intervention Models: Our research aims to develop character and virtue-based strategies that address the root causes of impulsivity and high-risk behaviors. By building resilience, empathy, and self-control, we seek to support individuals in making positive life choices.

  3. Support Positive Trajectories: By co-producing support models with the ADHD community, we create interventions that not only address compulsive behaviors but also reduce recidivism and addiction relapse rates.
