Addressing ADHD’s Role in Compulsive Behaviours and Criminal Activity

A pioneering project from Oasis CEO Colin McGregor-Paterson, the ADHD Resilience Network explores how ADHD contributes to risky and compulsive behaviours addictions, and criminal justice involvement.

We aim to build a resource of evidence-based practice and peer support models, sharing information and raising awareness of neurodivergent conditions,  promoting positive life change and alternative pathways

The ADHD Resilience Network is a pilot project launched by Colin McGregor-Paterson, focussing on understanding and addressing the links between ADHD, high-risk compulsive behaviours, and criminal activity within.

Many people with ADHD or other neurodivergent conditions struggle with compulsive behaviours, such as drug and alcohol misuse, gambling  impulsive decision-making, and encounters with the criminal justice system. We aim to change that narrative through innovative research and peer-led support models.

Part funded by Thames Valley Police and Crime Commissioner, the project will feature a combination of lived-experience podcasts, support groups with guest speakers and discussion groups and a growing resource library. This initiative is intended to set a new standard for neurodivergent support that can scale into a national model.  First steps is to host several cafe events, raising awareness whilst implementing a survey to capture data about what our community wants and needs.

What are our aims ? To make a difference within our community and within our sector through evidence based information and advice.

The ADHD Cafe is the start of our pilot model, which will include ‘Lets be Frank’ Podcasts, Newsletter and Support Group:

  1. Raise Awareness: We highlight the complex relationship between ADHD, substance use and other compulsive behaviours,  and criminal activity to reduce stigma and promote understanding among health and social care professionals and our neurodiverse community.

  2. Develop New Intervention Models: Our ideas for research aim to develop character and virtue-based strategies that address the root causes of impulsivity and high-risk behaviours. By building resilience, empathy, and self-control, we seek to support individuals in making positive life choices.

  3. Co-production – together we can achieve something special: By co-producing our model with other lived experience experts and professionals, like our CEO Colin,  we hope a supportive community will evolve, developing   best practice models with and for the ADHD community.

Are you a professional, community member, or someone personally affected by ADHD? Join our network and over time gain access to resources, events, and research findings. Together, we can create a new approach to neurodivergence support.
